From Destroyer to Legend: The Evolution of Manny Pacquiao

By Fernando Jose - He used to be called “The Destroyer”, and rightfully so. ‘Cause as a dynamic 23 year old fighting in the super bantamweight division, destroying the opposition was the only thing running through Pacquiao’s mind whenever he was in the ring. At that time, the skinny southpaw from the Philippines had very little regard for defense and never seemed to care about winning or losing rounds. He was focused on one single goal which was to annihilate the opposition. Though always wild and reckless, he was just too powerful and too aggressive that no one could completely capitalize on his flaws. Manny “The Destroyer” was indeed a very exciting fighter. With sheer violence, he managed to become a two-time world champion. But he wasn’t really what you would call a “great” fighter. Well at least, not yet.

When he decided to move up to 126 and fight Ring featherweight champion Marco Antonio Barrera, Pacquiao was a 4-1 underdog. He defied the odds and beat who was then the third best pound for pound fighter in the world—and that he did in a dominant fashion. Pacquiao threw rapid punches from so many different angles that even Barrera, the great defensive fighter that he was, couldn’t do anything to protect himself.. Pacquiao was quite unorthodox and visibly one dimensional, but he was very successful nonetheless in giving Barrera the worst beating of his life. Beating Barrera who was considered the lineal champ made Pacquiao the man at the featherweight division. After that career-making fight, expectations went sky high for the Filipino.

Pacquiao to pursue P500M hotel in GSC

GENERAL SANTOS CITY -- How about a "Pacman" hotel?
World boxing superstar Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is seriously pursuing a career as an investor, revealing late Tuesday night, after playing basketball, his plan to build a P500 million hotel here.

Pacquiao's bid to build a classy hotel comes on top of a recent announcement that he too will develop a multi-million dollar integrated special economic zone also in this city, a locality home to many who've made millions from the tuna industry.
"The hotel will be constructed near the heart of the city. The blueprint of the project is already underway," he said in a phone interview.
From a poor family, Pacquiao rose to fame after beating several famous fighters in different weight classes, including Oscar "The Golden Boy" dela Hoya.

MANILA - After world-class performers Lea Salonga and Charice, it is Nicole Scherzinger’s turn to express her desire to sing the country's national anthem in  People’s Champ Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao's bouts.
Scherzinger, the half Filipino lead singer of popular American pop girl group “Pussycat Dolls,” said, if given a chance, she is willing to sing Lupang Hinirang in one of his fights.
“[It] would be an honor to sing the national anthem. So, let’s make that happen!” she said.
The singer admitted that she is a big fan of the Filipino boxing icon and that she has been following his career.
“I’m so proud of him. I’ve been following him. It’s just awesome to see my kababayans out there like Apl [de Ap of Black Eyed Peas] and Manny… there’s so much pride," she said.

Top-paid athletes: Pacman ranks 6th

MANILA, Philippines - Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao made it to Forbes magazine’s list of highest-paid athletes in the world, tying for the sixth spot with basketball phenom Lebron James and golfer Phil Mickelson.
According to Forbes, Pacquiao is the highest-ranking among four of the list’s new entrants, raking in a total of $40 million in the past 12 months. The boxing star is among the eight non-Americans on the list, which had golf icon Tiger Woods ($110 million) at the top.
“Pac-Man hogged the boxing spotlight over the past year with victories in two blockbuster fights against Oscar De La Hoya in December and Ricky Hatton in May that combined for more than $100 million in pay-per-view revenue in the US,” Forbes said in a brief write-up.
“The two blockbuster fights garnered more than 2 million pay-per-view buys in the US and earned Pac-Man $30 million combined.”

Pacquiao’s fortune

What’s Manny Pacquiao doing in the rarefied company of international sports superstars Tiger Woods of golf, Kobe Bryant of basketball, Kimi Raikkonen of Formula 1, Roger Federer of tennis, Valentino Rossi of motorcycle racing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. of Nascar and David Beckham of football? In terms of money made over the past year, the Pac-Man definitely belongs in that ultra-exclusive club.
Forbes, the magazine, has confirmed what everyone in this country suspected all along: Pacquiao is now one of the world’s highest-paid athletes. On the strength of earnings from his last two blockbuster fights with Oscar dela Hoya and Ricky Hatton, the Pac-Man from GenSan (or is it Saranggani?) pocketed an estimated $40 million over the past 12 months—good enough for sixth place on the mega-earning sports celebrities list.
Pacquiao was the highest-ranked newcomer in the list, which put him in a tie with basketball superstar LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers and world number-two golfer Phil Mickelson. For the eighth straight year, the title of highest-earning sportsman was conferred on golf god Woods, who earned $110 million despite being sidelined by injury for eight months after his dramatic US Open victory last June.

GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines—He is the icon of the opposition while the other one is a staunch supporter of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
But this did not prevent former president Joseph Estrada, who was sentenced and detained for corruption under Arroyo's government, to support boxing champion Manny Pacquiao's political plans for 2010.
"I am behind his plans," he said in Filipino during a visit here on Thursday.
Pacquiao earlier confirmed his plan to run in the 2010 race for the lone congressional district of Sarangani province.

Pacquiao appeals for dialogues after deadly Sarangani blasts

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - Following Saturday night’s deadly twin blasts in Maasim town in Sarangani province, the country’s Ambassador for Peace and Understanding Manny Pacquiao is calling for dialogues to achieve peace and stop bombings and kidnappings especially in Mindanao.
Pacquiao rushed to a hospital where the injured blast victims were taken to give them comfort as well as assistance.
“Bilang ambassador for peace, nalulungkot ako sa nangyari at kaya ko sila dinalaw dito at kinamusta dahil nabigla ako sa balita,” Pacquiao told ABS-CBN News.
One person was killed while 32 were reported wounded after two grenades exploded at the town plaza and town hall in Maasim. The town was celebrating the Kestebeng Festival when the twin blasts took place.
“The People’s Champ” went to St. Elizabeth Hospital Saturday evening and gave an initial amount of P39,000 to social welfare officials for assistance to the injured victims of the blast.
Pacquiao watched over some victims and talked to them.

Victorinox Swiss Army Maverick Chrono Manny Pacquiao Limited Edition

Au centreUnrivaled. Exemplary. Timeless - These are but three of many extolling adjectives that have been used by people from around the world in hailing Filipino boxing champion Manny "Pac-Man"Pacquiao. At 30 years old, the "People's Champ" or the "Pambansang Kamao," as Manny is alternately called by Filipinos, is at the top of his game - and still rising. Manny is the first Filipino and Asian boxer to have won five world titles in five different weight divisions. Champion boxers from Marco Antonio Barrera to Ricky Hatton have all been clobbered inside the ring by Manny, prompting the Ring Magazine to rate the Pinoy slugger as top pound-for-pound boxer in the world. For his sterling achievements, Manny has been named by Time Magazine as one of the world's most influential people of 2009. And now comes another distinction: Manny has been chosen by the Victorinox Swiss Army watch to become the first Filipino to have a limited edition timepiece named after him by an international brand. Marnie Chua, Victorinox Swiss Army watch brand manager in the Philippines, said that Pacquiao was lone luminary when they were thinking of paying tribute to Filipino greats. "We did not even have a list because any name we tried to put beside his, dwarfed in comparison, - he said. "Manny alone can embody the brand's core philosophy of innovation, functionality and reliability." Only 1,000 pieces of the Pac-Man Limited Edition will be available in the market, truly making it a rare "must-have" among collectors and anyone who has been made prouder to be Filipino because of Manny's achievements. The design of the Pac-Man edition is understated class: An image of boxing gloves is engraved on the face of the watch. On the back case is a rendition of Manny's face. Behind it is the Philippine flag with the words "A tribute to a Filipino boxing legend." All the materials used in the Pac-Man edition are the same for that of a luxury watch. From the sapphire crystal, scratch-proof glass face, down to the screw-down crowns and pushers, and high-grade straps and buckles, all in Pac-Man edition are first rate. Like all Victorinox Swiss Army watches, the Pac-Man edition is covered by a three-year limited warranty; more than the average offered by many top-quality brands. Every purchase of a Victorinox Swiss Army watch Pac-man edition comes with a glove with Pacquiao's printed signature. The Victorinox Swiss Army watch executives said that Pacquiao graciously accepted their offer to make him the ambassador of the brand in the Philippines. Then again, even before all of these happened, Pacquiao had already been patronizing Victorinox Swiss Army watches.

Pacquiao throws first punch in political battle for Sarangani

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao has thrown the first punch in his upcoming political battle against a well-known clan in Sarangani, signaling the start of election season in the southern province.

Pacquiao will once again try his luck in the political ring in next year’s elections, this time running in the lone congressional district of Sarangani where he is expected to face a member of the Chiongbian family.

The world’s top pound-for-pound fighter, in an interview aired in GMA’s Weekend Report, said the main reason he is running in Sarangani is that he failed to see any significant change during the Chiongbians' 14-year reign in the House of Representatives accusing the long-time political clan of doing nothing to uplift the lives of the poor.

Pacquiao calls out to Sarangani bombers

By Aquiles Zonio

Filed Under: Pacquiao, Acts of terror, Politics

MANILA, Philippines—After disposing of the likes of Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton in the ring, Manny Pacquiao is now taking on a different foe: terrorist bombers.
Alarmed by last weekend’s twin grenade attacks in Sarangani province that killed one person and wounded 32, the Filipino boxing king on Monday called on the attackers to sit down with him for talks on restoring peace in the area.
Not a surprising move from a man President Macapagal-Arroyo recently named as ambassador for peace. Pacquiao has also declared his intention to run in 2010 for the lone congressional seat of Sarangani.

Delusional anxiety: Pacquiao's vocabulary expands

Useful words in boxing and politics: anxiety and delusional
There are those in boxing who see the Miguel Cotto-Manny Pacquiao fight as an indication of what promoter Bob Arum plans for the remainder of the Pinoy Idol's career.
Many think that Arum, with the possible exception of the huge showdown fight against Floyd Mayweather, will try to keep Pacman bout as Top Rank in house affairs. Cotto, for example, is a Top Rank chattel who has or had a contract due to expire at the end of this year.
I asked Arum about that at a New York press conference and he said it is all poppycock.
"No, I will seek the maximum paydays for Manny no matter who handles the opponent," Arum said. "Golden Boy gets paid under our out of court settlement arrangement any way.
"If Manny fights a Golden Boy fighter, then Golden Boy gets 20 percent of my company's share of the profits from that bout. If Manny's opponent is not a Golden Boy boxer, then they get 25 percent of the profits we make.

Pacquiao will run!

By Nick Giongco

Manny Pacquiao reiterated on Monday his desire to run for public office when the Philippines holds its national elections in May of 2010. The boxing star told a handful of scribes from Manila Bulletin, Star and Inquirer–the Philippines’ major broadsheets–that there’s no turning back from his decision to seek the congressional seat in the province of Saranggani, in the island of Mindanao. Pacquiao’s wife Jinkee hails from the town of Kiamba, while the pound-for-pound king is a native of neighboring General Santos City. “I have been preparing for this since 2008,” said Pacquiao after he graced an event in a downtown Manila hotel. Pacquiao had tried to wrest the same post in his native South Cotabato but failed after being denied by Darlene Antonino-Custodio. Meanwhile, Pacquiao also revealed his choice for the next Philippine president during the same interview. “I would like Lito Atienza (the Philippines’ secretary of natural resources and a dear Pacquiao friend) to be the next Philippine president,” said the 30-year-old fighter. “Lito Atienza is pro-people and God-fearing.” Pacquiao’s next fight is not yet etched in stone but ringsiders are looking at Nov. 14 as the date of his much-awaited return to the ring possibly against Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.

Pacquiao Opponent outside the Ring Known

Manny Pacquiao is facing a formidable opponent outside the ring as the influential Chongbian clan of Sarangani province made known their plans to challenge him for a duel in the political arena.
Less than a year before the national elections in 2010, the influential Chongbian family of Sarangani in southern Philippines has announced that a top executive of the Chongbian owned shipping firm will face the popular Filipino boxer in a duel outside the ring.

Sarangani folk scrambling to join Pacquiao political party

MANILA, Philippines – People from Sarangani province are scrambling to become part of the People’s Champ Movement, the political party formed by Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao.

A report on QTV’s Balitanghali quoted Pacquiao as saying that application forms for the party had already run out. The world’s best pound-for-pound boxer had declared his intent to seek a congressional seat in the province for the 2010 elections.

The report added that Pacquiao likewise established communication with rival parties to foster friendship and unity.

Despite the overwhelming support received by the party which the Commission on Elections (Comelec) had recognized only a month ago, Pacquiao said he must not remain complacent on his political bid.

Pacquiao Will Knock Cotto Out in Six, Says Beristain

By Mark Vester
One of the best trainers in the sport, Ignacio "Nacho" Beristain, said Manny Pacquiao will stop Miguel Cotto within six rounds. The Cotto-Pacquiao bout is being lined up for November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with the catch-weight of 145-pounds being likely. Beristain trained Juan Manuel Marquez for both bouts with Pacquiao, and trained Oscar De La Hoya for last year's career-ending loss to Pacquiao.
Beristain says Cotto has not looked the same since last July's knockout loss to Antonio Margarito. He said Cotto was not himself in the recent fight with Joshua Clottey, where Cotto won a close split decision.
"Cotto remained a little deteriorated after the fight that he had with Antonio Margarito and to be up against Manny Pacquiao, with all due respect - since I respect and I admire Puerto Rican boxing, but I believe that Pacquiao should put him on the canvas in five or six rounds," Beristain told Primera Hora
He said Cotto may have made too many changes, and combined with the beating from Margarito, could be a dangerous combination for the fight ahead.

'Pacquiao can KO Cotto in 6 rounds'

Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao needs only six rounds to beat Puerto Rican champion Miguel Cotto, according to revered boxing trainer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain.
In a report by BoxingScene.com, Beristain said Cotto apparently lost his edge since receiving a brutal beating from Antonio Margarito last July.
"Cotto remained a little deteriorated after the fight that he had with Antonio Margarito and to be up against Manny Pacquiao, with all due respect - since I respect and I admire Puerto Rican boxing, but I believe that Pacquiao should put him on the canvas in five or six rounds," he said.
Beristain, who crafted Pacquiao nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez into a technical fighter, said Cotto had a hard time beating Joshua Clottey.

Manny Pacquiao, Pussycat Dolls Nicole vs.Carmit and Stallone

This story is a reach. Details are sketchy. Manny Pacquiao apparently will have a bit part in a movie either produced by or starring Sylvester Stallone. Gorgeous Nicole Scherzinger, who has a Filipino father, and is lead singer of the internationally renowned Pussycat Dolls will also be in the mix..

Nicole recently performed at the SM Mall - Asia Grounds. Back in April, Nicole sang America the Beautiful at Wrestlemania XX at Houston's Reliant Stadium.

Now, my "reach" is to put this in historical perspective and provide information and entertainment for my readers. Or at least have you look at pictures of the pretty women I have provided.

WWE Should Sign Manny Pacquiao

With rumors of Manny Pacquiao retiring from boxing, I believe the WWE should make a major push to sign him.
I’m not talking about signing Manny as a pro-wrestler, but sign him to a few appearances just like they did with Floyd Mayweather Jr. It was a huge boost in the mainstream media when Mayweather appeared in the WWE to feud with The Big Show. WWE was getting regular coverage from sources like ESPN and CNN.
I think it would be even more popular if Pacquiao appeared for the WWE. Pacquiao is an international star and boxing’s best fighter. He would bring an incredible amount of international publicity and open the WWE to markets previously uninhabited.
I can think of several ways to book Manny Pacquiao. In fact, I will write a series of articles in the near future on this very idea.
Boxing purists are probably shaking their heads as they read this. But, remember that this world revolves around money. Boxing and WWE are all about putting on the best shows to make the most money they can.

WWE News: Batista starring in movie with boxing champion Manny Pacquiao

WWE star Batista will be starring in a movie with boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, reports GMA News in the Philippines. Filming for the movie titled "Wapakman" begins this July.

Pacquiao will play a martial arts hero in the kung-fu movie, while Batista is expected to play the lead villain. Batista and Pacquiao's connection dates back to Pacquiao's recent boxing fight against Ricky Hatton where Batista accompanied Pacquiao to the ring.

"Pussycat Dolls" lead singer Nicole Scherzinger is also scheduled to be part of the movie. Scherzinger's connection to WWE is that she opened WrestleMania 25 in Houston with "America the Beautiful."

Manny Pacquiao the source of creative inspiration

Manny Pacquiao inspires works of art. And I received some great poetic feats, a couple of them epic, about the Filipino boxing icon, ahead of his contest with Ricky Hatton.

It has come down to deciding between the best three, and I cannot split them.  Here they are. I have also sent them off to Freddie Roach for his judgement, but I’d like to know which you think is best. (Be kind to the three writers/poets, please!)

Manny Pacquiao, Batista and Nicole Sherzinger to start filming movie

According to GMA News, pound-for-pound boxing king Manny Pacquiao will begin filming the movie Wapakman in July, starring alongside Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger and WWE star Batista, who will play the movie's villain with Pacquiao as the hero. Batista, as you likely recall, is part-Filipino himself and accompanied Pacquiao to the ring for his May 2 fight against Ricky Hatton.
The movie will reportedly be similar to Kung Fu Hustle, a critically-acclaimed martial arts comedy. Pacquiao says that shooting will not interfere with his boxing schedule at all, and given that he doesn't fight again until November, I see no reason it would.
I think there's some definite cult classic potential here. A boxing superstar, a wrestling superstar, and a pop superstar. Martial arts. Comedy. What's not to like?

PacMan’s New York Trip

By Dr. Allan Recto

Vancouver, Canada (June 28, 2009) – During the short layover of this PAL PR 106 flight from Manila to Las Vegas, this boxing photojournalist recounts when the PacMan paid New York City a weekend visit to receive an award and watch the fight of welterweights Miguel Cotto vs. Joshua Clottey at the Madison Square Garden, the Mecca of boxing. Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao and lovely wife Jinkee, along with Adviser Mike Koncz & Lawyer Franklin Gacal, flew into John F.
